Hawkshead Relish Orange & Whisky Marmalade 230g

Orange & Whisky Marmalade is a 230g jar of Seville orange marmalade with a 4% measure of whisky. Hawkshead Relish make it a mile outside Hawkshead in Cumbria, in a sixteenth-century barn on the edge of Esthwaite Water, cooking by hand in traditional open pans.

There are four ingredients: sugar, Seville oranges at 35%, water and whisky. Seville oranges are the bitter marmalade orange, so the jar has the sharp, slightly bitter peel of a proper marmalade rather than a sweet orange jam. The producer describes it as Seville oranges with a good dram of whisky leaving a pleasing warmth on the palate, and calls it fruity. The maker's rule is that if an ingredient does not add flavour or texture, it does not go in the jar.

Spread it on hot buttered toast, or on a warm breakfast pancake. It glazes a ham or a tray of sausages, and a spoonful stirred into a gravy for duck works well. On a cheeseboard it is good with a strong cheddar such as Wookey Hole Cave Aged Cheddar, and it belongs in a breakfast hamper with a pack of Taylors English Breakfast.

A 230g jar. No major allergens declared. The producer says all its products are free from nuts, gluten, additives and preservatives, and this one is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Refrigerate after opening.
