Fentimans Victorian Lemonade 275ml

A cloudy, botanically brewed lemonade from Fentimans, the Hexham, Northumberland drinks firm founded in 1905 when Thomas Fentiman took a ginger beer recipe as security on a loan and never got the loan back. Every bottle, the producer says, holds the juice of one and a half lemons.

Lemon juice is 19% of the drink, on a base of fermented ginger root extract, sugar, pear juice concentrate and cream of tartar, with lemon and orange flavourings and infusions of speedwell and juniper berry. Fentimans describe a pale, cloudy liquid reminiscent of homemade lemonade, a sharp, bitter taste balanced by the sweetness of pear and herbs, and a scent of freshly squeezed lemons. The ginger is there for the brew, not for heat.

Serve it over ice with a wedge of lemon, as the producer suggests. It is a good lemonade on its own and a better mixer: top up a measure of Salcombe Gin Start Point or Warner's London Dry Gin with it for a long summer drink, or use it in place of soda in a Pimm's. A bottle beside a packet of Mr Filbert's Salt Crust Peanuts is a decent afternoon.
