Salcombe Gin Start Point London Dry

A 70cl bottle of London Dry gin at 44%, distilled by Salcombe Gin at their waterside distillery in Salcombe, on the south coast of Devon, one of the few distilleries in the world you can reach by boat. It is named after Start Point, the lighthouse on the headland east of the town, and takes its idea from the Salcombe fruit schooners that once carried citrus and spice into the harbour.

Thirteen botanicals go into the still: Macedonian juniper, red grapefruit, lemon and lime, with English coriander seed, liquorice, cardamom, cubeb berries and angelica root among the rest. The citrus peels are hand-peeled fresh each day before distillation, and the spirit is brought to strength with soft Dartmoor water. The distillery describes the taste as fresh red grapefruit and classic juniper, exceptionally smooth, with earthy pine from the juniper behind the citrus.

The distillery's own serve is the right one: plenty of ice, a slice of red grapefruit and a good tonic such as Fentimans Connoisseurs Tonic Water.
