Mr Filbert's Salt Crust Peanuts 40g

Peanuts roasted in hot air and tumbled in sea salt until each one wears a thin, crunchy crust of salt. Mr Filbert's, who make their snacks in Charlton Mackrell, Somerset, began by roasting nuts by hand in small batches and still make these the same way.

Peanuts are 92% of the pack. The crust is built from sea salt at 2.9%, held on with a little rice flour and a thickener of acacia gum, glucose and maltodextrin. The maker describes them as satisfyingly crunchy, and that is the point: the salt crust cracks before you get to the nut, so they eat louder than a plain salted peanut. The maker lists them as vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free.

These are pub peanuts for the house. Put a bowl out with a Salcombe Gin Start Point and tonic, or a cold beer, and add a bag of Brown Bag Sea Salt & Malt Vinegar crisps if there are more than two of you. Crush a few over a Thai-style noodle salad for crunch, or stir them through a bowl of buttered popcorn for a film night. They are the right size for a coat pocket, a desk drawer or a picnic bag.
