The Lakes Gin Classic

A classic juniper-led gin distilled slowly in a copper pot still by The Lakes Distillery at Setmurthy, beside Bassenthwaite Lake near Cockermouth in Cumbria, on the site of an 1850s farm that was renovated when the distillery opened in 2014.

The distillery uses a small number of botanicals: juniper, coriander and angelica at the core, with orris root, cassia bark, liquorice, and orange and lemon peel. They are steeped overnight in the still like loose-leaf tea, then the still runs slow and long to draw out the oils, with water drawn from the Lake District National Park. The distillery's tasting notes give orange zest, Earl Grey tea and juniper on the nose, refreshing citrus with juniper and black pepper on the palate, and a long, zesty, peppery finish. Bottled at 46.6%.

That strength and the pepper make it a gin for a proper gin and tonic: pour a good measure over plenty of ice, top with a dry tonic such as Fentimans Connoisseurs Tonic Water, and garnish with a slice of pink grapefruit, which the distillery says suits the citrus in the gin. It also stands up in a martini or a negroni. For a gift, pair it with one of their whiskies, such as The One Fine Blended Whisky.
