Oxford Blue Creamy Blue Cheese 350g

Oxford Blue is a soft, creamy blue cheese in the Stilton tradition, sold here as a mini of about 350g. The Oxford Cheese Company make it at Burford in Oxfordshire; the company grew out of a cheese shop in Oxford's covered market in 1983, and Robert Pouget created the cheese to give his customers a blue with a creamier consistency than a Stilton.

The supplied ingredient list gives pasteurised cow's milk, salt, lactic culture, microbial rennet and Penicillium roqueforti, so it is suitable for vegetarians. The producer describes it as soft, creamy and aromatic, with tangy and spicy notes that linger and an unexpected hint of white wine and chocolate, and compares the style to Dolcelatte and St Agur but milder. It is aged for 14 to 16 weeks.

The producer suggests melting it over a warm steak, crumbling it into a salad, or serving it with fruit or dark chocolate. On a board it wants something sweet beside it: a spoon of Rosebud Preserves Quince Jelly, a few Peter's Yard sourdough crackers, and a glass of Lyme Bay Pinot Noir or a sweet wine.
