Miller's Toast Plum & Date 100g

Thin, crisp fruit toasts studded with dates, hand-baked by Miller's at a family bakery in Ashbourne in Derbyshire that has been going for more than a hundred years. The baker's verdict is short: breathtaking with blue cheese, blissful with Brie.

They are made in the biscotti way. A loaf of buttermilk, wheat flour, 42% chopped dates, linseeds, red plum concentrate, soft brown sugar, honey and olive oil is baked, sliced wafer thin and baked again until it is dry and snapping. Each slice shows a cross-section of fruit and seeds, and the flavour is sweet and toasty, with the plum keeping it from being one-dimensional.

The baker calls them slim and ultra-crispy for spreading or nibbling, and they are at their best under something soft and strong: a wedge of Butlers Blacksticks Blue, a ripe Brie, or a piece of Stilton at Christmas. They also work with a hard, salty cheese and a smear of caramelised onion chutney, or on their own with a glass of port.

A 100g box. Contains gluten from wheat and milk, and the bakery says its products are not suitable for nut allergy sufferers. Vegetarian by ingredients.
