Gusbourne Fifty One Degrees North 2016 is the prestige vintage sparkling wine of Gusbourne at Appledore near Ashford in Kent, made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown on the estate's own vineyards in Kent and Sussex. The name is the latitude the vineyards sit on, and the producer calls it a singular vintage wine like no other.
The blend is 67% Chardonnay and 33% Pinot Noir. About a fifth of the wine was fermented in old oak barrels, it was bottled in May 2017 and then aged on its lees for a minimum of 67 months, more than six years, before release. The producer's tasting note is a bright, lucid nose of lemon curd, ricotta and toasted brioche with flinty, nutty, mushroomy undertones, and a focused, long palate where the toasty notes sit beneath a zing of citrus zest. Dosage is 10g per litre. 12% ABV.
It is a wine for the table rather than the doorstep. Pour it with roast chicken, a whole baked fish or a plate of oysters, and finish the bottle with Bath Soft Cheese or Quicke's Mature Clothbound Cheddar and Peter's Yard Original Sourdough Crackers. It is drinking well now and will keep.
A 75cl bottle. Contains sulphites. Please drink responsibly.
