Filey Bay Yorkshire Single Malt Whisky Tasting Experience

Three 5cl bottles of Filey Bay single malt, made by the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery at Hunmanby in North Yorkshire from barley grown on the family's own farm, so the whisky goes from field to bottle in one place. The maker describes it as Yorkshire's only whisky, and this set is the way to taste across the range.

The three are the Flagship, the Moscatel Sherry Cask and the STR Red Wine Cask. The Flagship is matured in ex-bourbon casks and the maker calls it light, creamy and fruity, with honey, vanilla and caramel; it is bottled at 46%. The Moscatel Sherry Cask spends its time in ex-Moscatel hogsheads and gives chocolate-dipped orange, toasted nuts, caramel, honey and apricot. The STR Red Wine Cask, matured in shaved, toasted and re-charred red wine casks, is soft and malty with biscuit, marzipan, boiled sweets and red fruits. The distillery blends each bottling fractionally from selected casks, solera style, to keep the character consistent.

Pour all three side by side in small glasses with a jug of water and work from the Flagship through to the wine cask. It is a good evening for a whisky drinker who has not tried an English malt, and a sound present for one who has tried everything else. A square of Pump Street Jamaica 75% with the sherry cask, or a wedge of Shorrocks Whisky Lancashire Bomb, is worth trying.
