Farmhouse Biscuits Petticoat Shortbread in Embossed Santa Tin 400g

A 400g tin embossed with Father Christmas, filled with petticoat tail shortbread from Farmhouse Biscuits, baked in Nelson, Lancashire, where the McIvor family moved the bakery in 1978 after starting out in a farmhouse kitchen in 1962.

Four ingredients: wheat flour, 28% salted butter, sugar and rice flour. That is the whole recipe, and it is the proper one: all butter, no vegetable oil, with the rice flour giving the short, sandy bite that a shortbread should have. The petticoat tail is the fan-shaped wedge cut from a round, the traditional shape for a tin like this. The butter is what you taste, then the salt, then the sugar.

Shortbread wants a plain, strong cup beside it. Pour a mug of Taylors Loose Leaf English Breakfast or a cafetière of Cornish Coffee The Original, or serve a wedge with a spoon of Mrs Darlington's Lemon Curd as a pudding. The tin is a keepsake, and it is sized to send as a present on its own.
