A 530g fruit loaf cake in a gold striped tin, baked by Cartwright & Butler, the Arnett family's bakery at Gilberdyke in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
The baker calls it a classic recipe, baked by the Arnett family and passed down through generations. Sultanas are half the cake by weight, with 8% cherries and 2.5% whole and flaked almonds, made with butter, egg and black treacle. The top is decorated with golden and glazed cherries and blanched almonds, finished with a toasted marzipan star and dusted with icing sugar.
In the north of England fruit cake is often eaten with cheese. Try a slice with Shorrocks Lancashire Bomb or a wedge of Long Clawson Blue Stilton, and a pot of Tregothnan English Breakfast. The baker's advice for cutting is a serrated knife and a sawing action, wiping the knife between slices.
530g cake in a tin. Contains wheat (gluten), egg, milk, almonds and sulphites. May contain other nuts, mustard and soya. Once cut, keep the cake in its tin.
