The humbug is one of England's oldest boiled sweets, a hard-boiled, striped confection with a mint centre that has been made in various forms since the nineteenth century. Barney Jack's make theirs in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, which is the right place to make an English boiled sweet.
These are properly minty in the way that only a good humbug can be, not aggressively so, but present and clean, with the hard outer shell giving way to a softer centre as you work through it. The kind of sweet that rewards patience and disappears more slowly than you expect.
Made in England's confectionery capital by a producer who understands the tradition they are working in. Vegetarian, and a genuine piece of English food heritage in a 195g bag.
