Four 113g jars of chutney in one box from West Country Legends in Glastonbury, Somerset, who make their preserves with traditional methods and locally sourced ingredients and describe this set as a feast of legends in one box.
The four are Scrumpy Cider Chutney, 46% apple with onion, sultanas, ginger and a glug of cider; Piquant Chilli Jam, peppers and tomatoes with 2% chilli and garlic; Country Garden Tomato Chutney, 61% tomato with red pepper, raisins, mustard seed and a little chilli; and Sou'wester Onion Chutney, 30% red onion with balsamic vinegar. The maker sums them up as the smoky sweetness of the onion, the sun-ripened richness of the tomato, the fiery kick of the chilli jam and the bold, boozy warmth of the cider chutney.
The box is built for a cheeseboard. Put the cider chutney with Wookey Hole Cave Aged Cheddar, the onion with a wedge of Long Clawson Blue Stilton, the tomato with cold ham or a burger, and the chilli jam with a sausage roll or on the side of a cheese toastie. It also makes a sensible present for someone who has not tried the range and would rather have four small jars than one big one.
