Otter Vale Devon Fire Chutney

A 225g jar of Devon Fire Chutney from Otter Vale in Ottery St Mary, Devon, a family firm that still peels its onions by hand, cooks the chutney in gas-fired pots and pours many of its jars by hand.

Onions make up 26% of the jar and peppers 11%, with 3.75% oranges, sugar, vinegar, chillies, salt and spices. Otter Vale describe it as hot and versatile, with a surprisingly fruity flavour from the red peppers and oranges and a pleasant residual heat on the tongue from Scotch Bonnet chillies. That is a fair account: the orange is what you notice first, the sweetness and vinegar follow, and the chilli builds at the end rather than shouting at the start.

The maker suggests it as a dip with poppadoms or beside a curry, and as a fiery addition to cheese on toast, and both are right. It also does the job of a hot relish on a burger or a hot dog, and it stands up to strong cheese on a board: a wedge of Wookey Hole Cave Aged Cheddar or Quicke's Oak Smoked Clothbound Cheddar with a spoon of this and some crackers for cheese.
