Hawkshead Relish Christmas Marmalade 225g

An orange and lemon marmalade with cranberries and a glug of spiced Christmas liqueur, made by Hawkshead Relish in Hawkshead, Cumbria, in the middle of the Lake District.

The base is a proper bitter orange marmalade, sharpened with lemon, then the cranberries and the liqueur go in. The liqueur gives it a warm, spiced finish rather than any real strength, and the maker lists the alcohol content as nil once it is cooked. It is darker and rounder than the same maker's Orange and Whisky Marmalade, with the cranberries adding a tart edge.

Have it on hot buttered toast on Christmas morning, stir a spoonful into the glaze for a ham, or use it to fill a bakewell or a steamed sponge. Hawkshead Relish cook in open pans in a sixteenth century barn a mile outside the village, and the marmalade has the slightly uneven set of a small batch. It pairs well in a breakfast hamper with the Tiptree Christmas Conserve.
