Drivers Chunky Piccalilli

A mustard pickle with the vegetables left in chunks, made by Drivers at Braunstone Frith in Leicester, Leicestershire, where the Driver family have pickled since 1906 and, the firm says, still make things in the same tradition as their founder. Vegetables account for 55% of the jar.

Those vegetables are rehydrated onion, cauliflower and gherkin in variable proportions, held in a sauce of barley malt vinegar, water and sugar, thickened with maize starch and coloured and flavoured with turmeric and mustard. Expect the classic piccalilli balance: sharp vinegar, sweetness behind it, and the mustard and turmeric giving it that yellow, nose-tingling edge. The pieces keep some bite rather than collapsing into the sauce.

It belongs with a pork pie, cold ham, or a plate of cheese. Try it against a crumbly Mrs Kirkham's Clothbound Lancashire or a wedge of Long Clawson Blue Stilton, or use it to sharpen up a gammon sandwich. With Drivers Free Range Pickled Eggs and a slice of bread it makes a chip shop supper without the chips.

A 350g jar. Mustard and barley are declared as allergens. The ingredient list contains nothing from animals, so it suits vegetarians and vegans. Refrigerate once opened.
