Mrs Darlington's Real Ale Chutney

Mrs Darlington's Real Ale Chutney is a dark, savoury chutney made near Nantwich in Cheshire by a family firm that has cooked its own preserves since 1980, and the ale in it is local too: Eastgate Bright, brewed by Weetwood Ales in Cheshire. The producer's founder still oversees every recipe.

Onions come first on the ingredient list, followed by sugar, carrots, apple, malt vinegar, cauliflower and the ale at 5%, then treacle, dates, garlic, tomatoes, salt and spices, with no artificial colours or preservatives. That is a vegetable-led chutney rather than a fruit one: the onions and carrots give it body, the treacle and dates make it dark and sweet, the malt vinegar keeps it sharp, and the ale adds a malty depth underneath.

The producer calls it a must with a traditional ploughman's lunch or a meat pie, and one of their customers has it with cheese and crackers. Spoon it beside a pork pie, a wedge of Quicke's Mature Clothbound Cheddar or a slice of Long Clawson Blue Stilton, with Miller's Ale Crackers to match the malt. It also lifts a cold-meat sandwich or a sausage roll.

A 300g glass jar. Contains barley, wheat and sulphites. The ingredients are all plant based, so it suits vegans.

If your order arrives damaged, faulty, missing an item, or not as described, contact us within 48 hours of delivery with your order number and clear photos of the packaging and the affected item. Please keep all packaging until we've reviewed the issue.
