Mrs Darlington's Orange Curd

Mrs Darlington's Orange Curd is made near Nantwich in Cheshire by the family firm that started with lemon curd on its own farm in 1980 and grew its range from there. The founder still oversees the recipes, and this orange version follows the same whole-egg method as the original.

It contains sugar, pasteurised whole egg, a vegetable oil margarine, orange juice at 14%, a little lemon juice and orange oil, with no added colours or preservatives. The producer describes it as sweet but not too sweet, and fruity and orangey. The lemon juice is there to keep the orange honest, so it reads as fresh fruit rather than sweet-shop orange, and the egg gives it the richness a curd should have.

The producer suggests it on breakfast toast, on a plain scone at teatime, or as the filling in an orange drizzle cake. It is also good sandwiched into a chocolate sponge, and a spoonful on top of Wilton Porridge Oats makes a winter breakfast. A square of Cox & Co. Blood Orange Crunch Dark Chocolate alongside doubles down on the orange.
