Mrs Darlington's Bloody Mary Ketchup

Mrs Darlington's Bloody Mary Ketchup is made near Nantwich in Cheshire by a family firm that has cooked its own preserves since 1980. The maker calls it a grown-up, rich, robust tomato ketchup with a gentle spicy warmth, and it is built the way the cocktail is.

Tomato makes up 45% of the bottle, with sugar, red pepper, red wine vinegar and 6% vodka, then the Bloody Mary seasonings: garlic, Henderson's Relish, Tabasco, lemon juice, onion, allspice, a touch of celery flavour and chillies. It is thicker and darker than a standard ketchup, savoury from the relish, with a warmth that arrives slowly and does not overstay.

It was made for a full English breakfast and a bacon sandwich, and it earns its place there. It is also good on chips, on a burger, alongside a Scotch egg, or as the base of a quick sauce for prawns. Keep it beside the Mustard Ketchup and the Fruity Brown Sauce for a full set of breakfast sauces.
