Brown Bag Crisps West Country Cheddar & Onion

A 40g bag of hand-cooked cheddar and onion crisps seasoned with dried Somerset mature cheddar rather than a cheese flavouring. Brown Bag Crisps cook them in Cullompton, Devon, frying sliced potatoes in rapeseed oil before the seasoning goes on.

The seasoning is 8% of the bag and its cheese is the real thing: dried Somerset mature cheddar made with vegetarian rennet, listed alongside onion, sea salt, garlic and a little sugar. The producer describes the mature farmhouse cheese as a match for the crisps and the onion as a kick that completes the pairing, which is about right: sharp cheese up front, sweet onion behind, and a proper crunch. The flavour took a Great Taste star in 2024.

Eat them with a lunchtime sandwich, or open a bag beside a pork pie and a spoon of Tracklements Perfect Ploughman's Pickle. If you want to double down on the cheese, put out a wedge of Wookey Hole Cave Aged Cheddar and use the crisps as the crackers.
