Tracklements Perfect Ploughman's Pickle

Tracklements Perfect Ploughman's Pickle is a chunky vegetable pickle made by Tracklements at Easton Grey near Malmesbury in Wiltshire, where they cook parsnip, carrot, courgette, turnip and onion in malt vinegar with treacly muscovado sugar. The producer calls it a classic pickle for cheese.

The vegetables stay in pieces, so there is a toothsome crunch, as the producer puts it, along with a sweet tang and a sharp bite. Tomato puree, dates and tamarind paste give the sauce its dark, fruity depth, lemon juice and sea salt sharpen it, and chillies and allspice add a little warmth at the end. The Telegraph said the muscovado makes it a sophisticated choice. It won Great Taste Gold in 2009 and Taste of the West Bronze in 2012.

This is the pickle for a ploughman's lunch, a wedge of mature cheddar, and a thick-cut ham sandwich. It belongs in a cheese and pickle sandwich, beside a pork pie or a scotch egg, and on a cheeseboard with a crumbly Cheshire or Wensleydale. Try it in a cheese toastie or alongside cold roast beef.

The jar holds 245g. Contains gluten from the barley in the malt vinegar. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Refrigerate once opened.
