Mr Filbert's Somerset Applewood Smoked Mixed Nuts 100g

Roasted, salted peanuts, cashews and almonds, smoked slowly over applewood chips. Mr Filbert's, who make their snacks in Somerset, started out roasting nuts by hand in small batches in a refurbished coffee roaster and still season everything with fresh herbs and foraged ingredients where the recipe calls for them.

The mix is 98% nuts: 58% peanuts, 25% cashews and 17% almonds, with 2% sea salt and a little rapeseed oil. The smoke comes from wood chips from apple orchards, and the maker describes the result as rich, flavoursome and smoky. There is nothing else in the bag: no smoke flavouring, no sugar. The maker lists them as gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan.

Open them with a cold Belvoir Ginger Beer or a beer at the end of the day, or tip them into a bowl next to the cheese: the smoke sits well against a mature cheddar such as Quicke's Mature Clothbound Cheddar. Chop a handful and scatter them over a salad of roast squash, or over soup, for crunch and a barbecue note.
