Hawkshead Relish Boxing Day Chutney 195g

A lightly spiced apple and sultana chutney with ginger, made by Hawkshead Relish in Hawkshead, Cumbria, and named for the day it earns its keep: the one after Christmas, when the fridge is full of cold cuts and cheese.

Apples are 36% of the jar and sultanas 9%, cooked with onions, sugar, ginger, garlic and mixed spice, with a touch of cayenne. It is softer and sweeter than the maker's Christmas Chutney, more of a gingered apple relish than a dark fruit chutney, so it suits leftover turkey, ham and pork pie, and mild cheeses such as Wensleydale.

Put it on the table with the Boxing Day buffet, use it in a toasted cheese sandwich, or add a spoonful to a bubble and squeak. Hawkshead Relish cook everything by hand in open pans in a barn a mile outside the village, and nothing goes in that does not add flavour or texture.
