Drivers Spicy Calypso Chutney, 350g

A mango and pineapple chutney with a chilli kick, made by Drivers at their Braunstone Frith factory in Leicester, Leicestershire, where the fourth generation of the Driver family still runs the pickle and vinegar company founded in 1906. The producer calls it a taste of Caribbean sunshine, and the ingredient list backs that up.

Pineapple and mango make up 20% each, cooked with sugar and white wine vinegar, onion and red pepper. The heat comes from 7% red chillies and a further 2% Scotch bonnet, which the producer describes as a delicate kick rather than a scorch. Sweet fruit arrives first, the sharpness of the vinegar keeps it from cloying, and the chilli builds behind it. There is mustard in the seasoning, which is declared as an allergen.

The producer suggests it alongside jerk cooked meats and fish, with a mature hard cheese, or as a marinade to cook with. Try it beside a wedge of Quicke's Mature Clothbound Cheddar, spooned into a chicken wrap, or brushed over pork before it goes on the barbecue. Any of the crackers for cheese will carry it to the cheese.

A 350g jar. The producer lists it as vegan and gluten free, and the ingredients contain no animal products. Keep refrigerated once opened.
