Charbonnel et Walker Milk Chocolat Charbonnel, 200g

Drinking chocolate made from flakes of milk chocolate rather than powder, from Charbonnel et Walker, made at Poundbury near Dorchester in Dorset for the Bond Street chocolatiers whose original dark drinking chocolate has been served since the firm began in 1875. This is the milk chocolate version of that drink.

The tin holds nothing but chocolate: sugar, cocoa butter, whole milk powder, cocoa mass, a little soya lecithin and natural vanilla, at a minimum of 33.5% cocoa solids and 20.5% milk solids. The maker describes it as rich and smooth, a touch sweeter than the original dark but with the same body. Because it is real chocolate melting into the cup rather than a cocoa mix, the drink is thick and coats the spoon.

Heat milk, stir in a spoonful of flakes until they dissolve, and drink it as it is. The maker notes the traditional way was chocolate and water only, and suggests milk for a richer cup, with whipped cream, a few extra flakes or a measure of liqueur on top for an occasion. A biscuit alongside is not wrong: Farmhouse Biscuits Shortbread Rings or one of the Kent & Fraser Lemon Butter Shortbread.
