A box of dark chocolates drawn from the old recipe books of Charbonnel et Walker, the London chocolatiers who opened on Bond Street in 1875 and still hand-make their chocolates to the recipes of Madame Charbonnel. The house says it is particularly known for its dark chocolate, and this is the box that makes the case.
The maker names the centres as the Falstaff, Amandes, Crème Cassis, Caramel Noix and Lemon Coconut, with others alongside. The ingredient list fills in the detail: marzipan made with almonds, hazelnut praline paste, Brazil nuts, pistachios, blackcurrant jam, pineapple preserve, coffee, coconut, vanilla caramels and fondant creams, all under dark chocolate. There is whisky in one centre and a little ethanol in the marzipan, so the box contains alcohol. The flavours are old-fashioned in the best sense: fruit creams, nut pralines and caramels rather than anything built for novelty.
It is a box to set out after dinner and let people pick from over an hour. A glass of The Lakes Whiskymaker's Reserve goes with the nut and caramel pieces; the fruit creams are better with a cup of Cornish Coffee. As a present it needs no wrapping beyond the box.
A 325g box. Contains milk, soya, almonds, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts and pistachios, and may contain traces of other nuts, egg and gluten. Contains alcohol. Keep cool and dry.
