Tracklements Tomato & Chilli Chutney

Tracklements Tomato & Chilli Chutney is a rich, tangy chutney that Tracklements make at Easton Grey near Malmesbury in Wiltshire with the ripest Mediterranean tomatoes, balanced with sweet onions and fiery chillies. The producer says the chilli gives it a tongue-tingling heat.

Tomatoes make up 36% of the jar and onions 32%, cooked with cider vinegar, raw cane sugar, Bramley apples, dates and a little tomato puree. Red chillies, garlic puree, black pepper, allspice and ginger do the seasoning. The apples and dates give it a soft sweetness, the vinegar keeps it sharp, and the chilli builds to a warm heat rather than a hot one. It won a Taste of the West Silver in 2012.

The producer says it is sensational spread on toast, covered with cheese and grilled. It is also a good chutney for a ploughman's, a cheese and ham toastie or a plate of cold meats, and it goes with a sharp cheddar better than most. Spoon it into a bacon sandwich, serve it with sausages and mash, or add a spoonful to a bean stew for sweetness and heat.
