Tracklements have made this chutney at Easton Grey in Wiltshire, where they have built a name for English-made condiments since 1970. Ripe Mediterranean tomatoes and sweet onions are cooked slowly with cider vinegar, raw cane sugar and Bramley apples until thick and glossy. Dates lend a quiet sweetness while red chillies, garlic, ginger and allspice build a warm, tongue-tingling heat.
The result is rich and tangy, deep red, with a soft, spoonable set. Each jar holds 250g.
Spread it thickly on toast and grill it under a blanket of cheese, or serve it beside a ploughman's, cold meats and a sharp Cheddar. It works well in a bacon sandwich too. Gluten free and suitable for vegans. Keep it in the fridge once opened.
