Stokes Original Barbecue Sauce

A barbecue sauce in the classic mould, sweet, thick and smoky, cooked by Stokes in small batches at the Old Stables kitchens of Rendlesham Hall in Rendlesham, Suffolk, where the firm has made its sauces since 2004.

Tomato purée carries the base, with 21% sugar and cane molasses, 5% honey and 4% black treacle providing the sweetness, spirit vinegar to keep it in check, and a seasoning that brings smoke, garlic, onion and spice. The producer describes it as everything a barbecue sauce should be. Great Taste judges called it a lighter-style barbecue sauce with sweetness and smokiness well judged, a rich, inviting colour, and a flavour that lingers well on the palate. They also called it a welcome alternative to the over-punchy barbecue sauces typically found, which is a fair summary.

The producer suggests it with all barbecue meats: chicken, pork ribs, steaks, burgers and sausages. Spread it over chicken breasts before they go in the oven for a Hunter's chicken, brush it on as a glaze in the last minutes of cooking, or simply put it on the table as a dip. It works alongside a bowl of Snaffling Pig Marvellous Maple Pork Crackling and any of the Stokes sauces for a lazy summer evening.

A 315g bottle. Vegetarian, dairy free and gluten free according to the producer. The seasoning contains barley malt extract, which is declared as an allergen. Not vegan, as it contains honey.
