Gusbourne Fifty One Degrees North 2016 Magnum

Gusbourne Fifty One Degrees North 2016 in magnum is the prestige vintage sparkling wine of Gusbourne at Appledore near Ashford in Kent, made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown on the estate's own vineyards in Kent and Sussex. Only a small number of magnums were filled, at the same time as the 75cl bottles, and Gusbourne describes it as its most exclusive vintage wine in magnum.

The blend is 67% Chardonnay and 33% Pinot Noir. About a fifth of the wine was fermented in old oak barrels and it was bottled on 11 May 2017. The magnum then spent a minimum of 92 months on its lees, more than seven and a half years and over two years longer than the 75cl bottle, so the dosage was lowered to suit. Gusbourne's notes describe a precise, powerful wine: lemon, apricot and red apple with toasted hazelnut, fresh croissant and honey, a fine mousse, a mineral, salty edge and a long finish. 12% ABV.

A magnum holds two bottles, enough for around twelve glasses, which makes it the bottle for a Christmas table or a big celebration. Gusbourne's head of hospitality suggests pan-fried halibut with a cream sauce, chanterelle mushrooms and samphire. It is drinking well now and will keep.
