Drivers Real Ale Chutney

A dark apple and onion chutney with a measure of ale, made by Drivers at Braunstone Frith in Leicester, Leicestershire, where the fourth generation of the Driver family carries on the pickle and vinegar business started in 1906. The producer says apple pulp, onions and mixed fruits are brought together into something so more-ish you will struggle to put it back in the fridge.

Apple pulp leads, followed by rehydrated onions and sugar, then the ale and a mix of sultanas, currants and candied peel. That is a sweet, fruity chutney with the onion and ale giving it a savoury, malty base rather than a jammy one. The ale brings gluten, and there are sulphites in the apple pulp and the peel, so both are declared as allergens.

This is a ploughman's chutney first: cut a wedge of Wookey Hole Cave Aged Cheddar, add cold ham, a pickled onion or two and a hunk of bread, and let the chutney do the rest. It also works in a cheese toastie, under the lid of a pork pie, or spooned over sausages with mash. Any of the crackers for cheese will carry it happily.

A 350g jar. Suitable for vegetarians according to the producer. Refrigerate once opened.

If your order arrives damaged, faulty, missing an item, or not as described, contact us within 48 hours of delivery with your order number and clear photos of the packaging and the affected item. Please keep all packaging until we've reviewed the issue.
