Drivers 1906 Pickled Onions In Vinegar

Whole hand peeled onions in spiced vinegar, pickled the traditional way by Drivers at Braunstone Frith in Leicester, Leicestershire, using what the firm calls its secret vinegar recipe. The 1906 in the name is the year Frederick Charles Driver set up the family's pickle and vinegar company, and his descendants still run it.

The pickling liquor is spirit vinegar with barley malt extract, black and white peppercorns, mustard seeds and birds eye chillies, plus salt and a sulphite preservative. That gives a sharp, clean vinegar bite with pepper warmth underneath and a small nudge of chilli heat. The producer says the onions are selected and hand peeled, and they stay whole and firm in the jar.

Drivers suggest them with cold meats and cheese, which is exactly right. Put a few beside a hunk of Mrs Kirkham's Clothbound Lancashire and a pork pie, or line them up with ham, bread and a spoonful of Tracklements Spiced Plum Chutney for a proper ploughman's. They are also the right thing to fish out of the jar with a fork while the chips are in the fryer.

A 550g jar. The producer lists them as vegan, and the ingredient list has nothing from animals. Barley, mustard and sulphites are declared as allergens.
