Mrs Darlington's Ploughman's Pickle No.7

Mrs Darlington's Ploughman's Pickle No.7 is made near Nantwich in Cheshire by a family firm that has cooked its own preserves since 1980. Sarah Darlington created it for her farmer husband Tim to have with his daily ploughman's lunch, and it took seven attempts before he gave it his approval, hence the name.

The maker cooks it in open pans, and the jar is full of crunchy vegetables: carrots, onion, swede, cauliflower and gherkins, with tart Bramley apples, dates, tomato paste, garlic and gentle spices in a sauce of spirit and malt vinegar. It is chunkier and less sweet than the big-brand pickle, with the vinegar and apple giving it a proper tang.

This is the pickle for a cheese sandwich, a pork pie, a slice of cold ham or a ploughman's plate with a hunk of Quicke's Mature Clothbound Cheddar and crackers. It is also good folded into a cheese toastie before it goes under the grill.

A 312g glass jar. Contains gluten, from the barley in the malt vinegar. Every ingredient is plant based.
