Mrs Darlington's Cracking Christmas Chutney

Mrs Darlington's Cracking Christmas Chutney is made near Nantwich in Cheshire by a family firm that has cooked its own preserves since 1980. The maker says cold turkey and ham are crying out for it, and that it keeps the flavours of Christmas going after the festive season.

Cranberries make up 23% of the jar and apple 21%, cooked with sugar, onion, red wine vinegar, sultanas, salt and mixed spice, with black carrot extract for colour and no added preservative. It is a fruit-led chutney, sharp from the cranberries, sweet from the sultanas and apple, and lightly spiced rather than heavily so, which keeps it useful well past January.

It is the chutney for the Boxing Day buffet, the turkey and stuffing sandwich, and the Christmas cheeseboard, where it suits a blue such as Butlers Blacksticks Blue as well as a cheddar. Pair it with crackers for cheese, and put it in a hamper next to Mrs Darlington's Very Merry Christmas Preserve.
