Mrs Darlington's Blackberry & Apple Jam

Mrs Darlington's Blackberry & Apple Jam is made near Nantwich in Cheshire by a family firm that has cooked its own preserves since 1980. The maker calls it a firm favourite in many households, and it is the hedgerow pairing everyone knows from crumbles.

Blackberries make up 26% of the jar and Bramley apples 22%, cooked with sugar, pectin and lemon juice, with no added colour or preservative. The Bramley brings sharpness and helps the set, so the jam is firmer than a pure berry jam and less sweet, with the apple's flavour sitting quietly behind the blackberry.

The maker suggests it in a freshly baked tart, and it is also a good jam for a lattice pie or a bakewell base. On toast it tastes like September. Try it on a warm drop scone with a little butter, or beside a slice of crumbly Lancashire cheese, which likes fruit.
