Charbonnel et Walker Pink Marc De Champagne Truffles 135g

The best-known truffle made by Charbonnel et Walker, the Bond Street chocolatiers who have hand-made chocolates to Madame Charbonnel's recipes since 1875; this box comes from their kitchens at Poundbury near Dorchester in Dorset. A white chocolate shell, a milk chocolate centre with Marc de Champagne, and a dusting of pink sugar.

The maker describes it as a white chocolate truffle with a hint of strawberry and a creamy milk chocolate Marc de Champagne centre, rolled in a little powdered sugar. White chocolate is 45% of the truffle and milk chocolate 30%, with slightly salted butter in the centre, 2.1% Marc de Champagne and 1.3% white rum. The pink comes from beetroot and the strawberry note from natural flavouring. They are soft, sweet and buttery, and the alcohol shows as a warmth at the end rather than a hit.

This is the box for an anniversary, an engagement or a birthday, and it looks the part before it is opened. Serve with a glass of Nyetimber Classic Cuvée or Chapel Down English Rosé, or with coffee at the end of dinner. One or two each is about right; they are rich.
