Methodology
Surveys
Our surveys are commissioned by Made in England and carried out by Censuswide. Censuswide is a member of the Market Research Society and the British Polling Council and a signatory of the Global Data Quality Pledge. It abides by the MRS Code of Conduct and ESOMAR principles.
For every survey we publish who was asked and how many, the fieldwork dates, the survey reference, and the results for every question.
Figures for regions and cities come from smaller groups of respondents than the national figures. City figures in particular should be read as indicative. Each report gives the sample sizes.
Our first survey
Censuswide surveyed 2,001 adults in England between 13 and 16 April 2026. The sample is nationally representative of adults aged 18 and over. Survey reference J17714CWMP. Full results for all 20 questions.
Maps and interactives
Each map or interactive explains on its own page how it was put together, what counts and what does not, and when it was last checked.
The swap finder
Find a UK-owned swap shows a product only when two tests are met with a source. First, the business that ultimately owns the maker is owned and run from the UK. A UK company owned by an overseas parent does not count. A company listed on a UK stock exchange is shown as UK-listed, not UK-owned, because its shareholders can be anywhere, and the finder lets you exclude listed companies. A company listed only abroad does not count as UK-listed, even if its head office is in the UK. Second, the product is made in England: manufactured, brewed, distilled, blended or bottled at source there, not just cut, packed or labelled. Each result carries the date its maker was last checked and the sources behind it. Where a maker's status cannot be established, its products are withheld rather than shown. We link only to our own shop, to the maker, or to shops that pass the same ownership test. We earn retail revenue when someone buys from our own shop. We receive no commission or other payment for links to makers or to other shops.
"Based in" means where the company that ultimately controls the brand has its head office. Where that differs from where the company is incorporated or listed, we show all three. For example, Nomad Foods (Birds Eye) has its head office in Woking, is incorporated in the British Virgin Islands and is listed in New York, so it does not count as UK-owned or UK-listed.
