English whisky distilleries, mapped

The Government says more than 70 distilleries now make English whisky. We checked every name we could find against its own website and the public record. Fifty-one distil whisky today; 38 have released their own.

Key findings

  • We could confirm 51 distilleries in England making whisky on their own stills. The Government's figure is more than 70. Most of the gap is brands with no still of their own, projects that have not filled a cask, and closures.
  • The South West has 13, more than any other region. Six of them are in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
  • London has eight whisky names and two working whisky distilleries.
  • At least 15 of the 38 that have released a whisky put out their first in 2023 or later. Seven did so in 2025.

The South West has more whisky distilleries than any other region

Each marker is one of the 51 working whisky distilleries in England. Filled markers have released a whisky. Open markers have not, or we could not confirm a release. Select a marker or a name for details.

Why our count is 51, not more than 70

In September 2026 the Government agreed to give English whisky protected status, as Scotch whisky, Irish whiskey and single malt Welsh whisky already have. The decision is under appeal. When it was announced, the Government said more than 70 distilleries were producing English whisky, up from 46 in 2023.

We could confirm 51. Most of the difference is definition. Lists of English whisky makers include brands whose spirit is distilled somewhere else, projects that have not filled a cask, and distilleries that have closed. We counted only sites in England that distil whisky spirit on their own stills and are trading now.

London has eight whisky names and two whisky distilleries

Eight London names appear on lists of English whisky makers. Only two, Bimber and Doghouse, distil whisky there today. Five are brands without a working whisky still of their own.

The South West has 13 distilleries, more than any other region, and six of them are in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Wiltshire has four, none of which has released a whisky yet. The North West has nine.

At least 15 of the 38 released their first whisky in 2023 or later

English whisky is young. Of the distilleries that publish a date, only four had a whisky out before 2018: The English Distillery, Healeys, Adnams and Cotswolds.

Seven distilleries released their first whisky in 2025

First whisky release by year. Each square is one distillery.

Made in England graphic. Six distilleries do not publish a first release date and are not shown.

Whisky has to spend at least three years in cask, so each release marks a distillery that started work three or more years earlier. The 13 still waiting are the next wave.

Thirty-five of the 51 offer tours or tastings

All of those can be booked by the public, and 32 of the 51 have a shop on site. The Lakes, one of the best known, closed its shop, bistro and tours in April 2026 and no longer takes visitors.

What protected status means

Protected status is a legal protection for a name. Its official title is a geographical indication, or GI. The name went on the official register on 1 October 2026. Only whisky that meets the rules can be sold as English whisky, in the same way that only whisky made in Scotland can be called Scotch. For a buyer, that means the words English whisky on a label say where and how the whisky was made.

Under the rules, the spirit must be made from UK grain, mashed, fermented and distilled in England, and matured in England for at least three years in wooden casks of no more than 700 litres. They are set out in the product specification.

Producers must be verified by HMRC before they use the name. No list of verified producers had been published when we checked, so this page does not say who is verified.

The decision is under appeal. The Scotch Whisky Association objects to the definition of single malt, and two English distilleries, Circumstance and Spirit of Birmingham, have appealed over the wording on copper stills.

Twenty names on other lists do not distil whisky today

These are real businesses, and several sell good English whisky. They are not on the map because they do not distil whisky on their own stills today.

Brands without a still of their own

  • East London Liquor Co.LondonLeft its Bow distillery in 2024, after going into administration in 2023. Its spirit is now made at partner distilleries.
  • FieldenBedfordshireHas no distillery of its own. Its rye whisky is distilled at Adnams in Suffolk.
  • Harvey's BreweryLewes, East SussexIts single malt is mashed at the brewery and distilled by English Spirit.
  • Hawkridge DistillersBerkshireSells English whisky, including Hammond's Iron Ridge, without saying who distils it.
  • Kingston Distillers (Beckett's)Kingston upon ThamesReleased a single malt in 2024. No source says who distilled the spirit.
  • The London Distillery CompanyLondonBottling casks filled before it went into administration in 2020. It has no distillery at present.
  • Mercia WhiskyStaffordshireWe found no evidence of a whisky still. Its first whisky is due in spring 2027.
  • Old Bakery DistilleryLondonBy its own account, its malt whisky was bought from Adnams.
  • Sacred SpiritsLondonFinishes English whisky that was distilled elsewhere.

  • Aedda's Farm DistilleryBuckinghamshireOpen to visitors since May 2026. Its own blog says the whisky runs have not started.
  • Bodmin Jail DistilleryCornwallPlanning permission was granted in 2026. It is due to open in 2027.
  • Princetown DistilleryDevonBuilt but not producing when last reported, in August 2024.
  • SC DogsSt Martin's, Isles of ScillyA rum distillery working towards a whisky from its own barley.
  • Whitby DistilleryNorth YorkshireA new site with whisky facilities is planned for 2027.
  • Yorkshire Dales DistilleryNorth YorkshireSelling casks of a first whisky. We found no evidence that any has been distilled yet.

Closed, or no longer distilling

  • Anno DistillersKentReleased one single cask single malt in 2019. The company is in liquidation.
  • Bankhall Distillery, BlackpoolLancashireIts premises licence ended in January 2025. The owner says Bankhall is now produced in Cumbria.
  • Chase DistilleryHerefordshireClosed by Diageo in January 2025. Its whisky casks now belong to Rosemaund Farm.
  • The Oxford Artisan DistilleryOxfordStopped distilling in 2024. New owners plan to reopen it in 2027.
  • Winchester DistilleryHampshireIts stills went to auction in June 2026. Its spirits are now made by partners.

A further 13 names appear on other lists, but we found no reliable evidence that they make whisky. We have left them off until they confirm.

How we checked

We started from the names on published lists of English whisky makers and swept each region for others: 94 names in all. Each was checked against its own website, then Companies House, the English Whisky Guild member list and the trade and local press. A second pass went back over every doubtful entry, and a separate reviewer re-tested a random sample of 20.

A distillery counts if it distils spirit intended to become whisky on its own stills, in England, and is trading now. Whisky released means its own spirit, aged three years or more, has gone on sale, including releases that have sold out.

Five entries rest on limited evidence and say so. Some distilleries do not publish release dates or addresses. Markers are placed by postcode. We did not use any other distillery map as a source.

If you run one of these distilleries, or know of one we have missed, tell us and we will correct the page: hello@madeinengland.com

Sources: each entry links to the distillery's own website and, where the evidence is from elsewhere, to that source. Protected status: the Defra announcement and product specification linked above, and the decision notice. Map boundaries: Office for National Statistics, Open Government Licence v3.0.
