Food, feed and drink exports by English region

HMRC's quarterly figures for food, feed and drink exports allocated to the nine English regions, by where exporting businesses employ people rather than where the goods were made. With product groups, destinations and the full series since 2021 to download, updated after every HMRC release.

£3.1bnof food, feed and drink exports allocated to England's nine regions, April to June 2026
3.8%lower in value than the same quarter of 2025, at current prices
£12.7bnin the 12 months to June 2026, 0.3% lower than the previous 12 months

Every three months HMRC publishes the value of goods exported from each UK region. This page brings together its food, feed and drink figures for England's nine regions, with product groups, destinations and the full quarterly series since 2021 to download. HMRC's own tables cover all goods; as far as we can find, this is the only food, feed and drink cut for the nine regions published every quarter.

HMRC allocates each exporting business's trade to regions by where it employs people, not by where its products were made. So the figures describe the exports associated with each region under HMRC's method, not the value of goods physically made there. How these figures are made sets out what that means.

Read this first

  • Allocated by where exporting businesses employ people, not where the goods were made.
  • Current prices, not adjusted for inflation. Change is in value, on the same quarter a year earlier.
  • The latest quarter is provisional and HMRC revises it.
  • The England total leaves out UK trade that HMRC could not place in a region.
  • Figures are rounded, so the regions may not add exactly to the total.

England, 12-month totals since 2021

Food, feed and drink exports, £ million, current prices. The 12-month total is the sum of the latest four quarters, which smooths out seasonal swings.

How these figures are made

What the regions mean

The figures come from HMRC's Regional Trade in Goods Statistics. HMRC spreads a multi-site business's exports across regions in proportion to where its employees are. A region can therefore be allocated exports when the goods were made somewhere else, and a region that makes a great deal can be allocated less than it produces. The figures describe the regional allocation of exporters' trade, not regional production, and nothing on this page should be read as how much food each region makes. A business with a single site is allocated wholly to that site's region. Businesses that are not registered for VAT are not included.

What counts as food, feed and drink

The definition is Defra's, so the England total can be set against Defra's UK figures, and the page is named for it: feed and oils are inside the total, so a plain food and drink figure would be smaller. It is SITC divisions 01 to 09 (meat, dairy and eggs, fish, cereals, vegetables and fruit, sugar and honey, coffee, tea, cocoa and spices, animal feed, and miscellaneous edible products), 11 (beverages), 22 (oil seeds) and 41 to 43 (animal and vegetable oils and fats). Live animals (00) and tobacco (12) are left out. The list is fixed. If it ever has to change, the change will be logged here and the whole series restated.

Prices, revisions and seasons

Values are in current prices, not adjusted for inflation or for the time of year, and are shown to the nearest £100,000. Every change on this page is a change in value, not in the quantity of goods. Comparisons are with the same quarter of the previous year, or with the previous 12 months for the rolling totals. HMRC treats the latest figures as provisional and revises them. After each HMRC release we update this page in place and regenerate every download in full, so earlier figures can change; each update is recorded in the change log below.

Unallocated UK trade

Not all trade can be placed in a region. In April to June 2026, £564m of the UK's food, feed and drink exports was unallocated, £333.5m of it from businesses HMRC can identify but cannot place and £230.3m from businesses it cannot identify. The England total is the sum of the nine regions and leaves this out. The download carries Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the two unallocated lines as well.

Why the series begins in 2021

HMRC changed how it collects EU trade data in January 2021 for exports and January 2022 for imports. The series here starts in 2021 and is not comparable with earlier years. The 12-month totals begin with the year to December 2021, the first four quarters on the new basis.

How this differs from Defra and FDF figures

This is our cut of HMRC's public data, not an official HMRC or Defra release. HMRC's own tables cover all goods by region. UK-wide food and drink trade figures are published by Defra and the Food and Drink Federation, and the FDF publishes a regional report once a year. Both the FDF and the Welsh Government use slightly different product lists, so their figures will not match these exactly. As far as we can find, nobody else publishes the nine English regions every quarter, which is why this page exists. Corrections are welcome: write to marcus@madeinengland.com.

Next update

HMRC publishes July to September 2026 on 17 December 2026. This page will be updated after that release, and the next three HMRC dates will be listed here as HMRC confirms them.
