Yorkshire pudding is the world's most-loved English food. Japan prefers the Scotch egg

Yorkshire pudding is the most-searched English food in 20 of the 31 countries we mapped, from the US and Canada to Germany, Italy and South Africa. Japan looks up Scotch eggs more often than Britain does, France picks crumpets, and four countries choose Eton mess.

Key findings

  • US searches for Yorkshire pudding rise 4.5 times every December on average, against 1.9 times in the UK.
  • Japan searches for Scotch eggs 21,000 times a month, more than the UK's 17,000.
  • 15 of the 25 foods are searched more abroad than at home. Together they draw about 784,000 searches a month abroad and 505,000 in the UK.

Yorkshire pudding tops 20 of the 31 countries we mapped

Each country is coloured by the English food it searches for most. Eton mess wins in four countries, the Scotch egg and banoffee pie in three each, and crumpets in one. Countries in grey either don't search for these foods or search less than 1,000 times a month for their top one, too few to call a winner.

In Europe, Yorkshire pudding leads in 12 of the 17 countries mapped. The exceptions are France, which picks crumpets, and the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland and Finland, which pick Eton mess.

US searches for Yorkshire pudding rise 4.5 times at Christmas

US searches for Yorkshire pudding jump every December. Since 2016, December has averaged 4.5 times a typical month, and in nine of the ten years it was more than four times. In the UK, where it comes with the Sunday roast all year, December searches rise 1.9 times.

The reason is the prime rib. A standing rib of beef is the centrepiece of many American Christmas dinners, and US searches for prime rib rise about tenfold in December. Lawry's The Prime Rib in Beverly Hills has served Yorkshire pudding alongside it since 1938.

The UK still searches far more per head. The US has about five times the population, and in a typical month Britain searches about ten times as often per person. In raw numbers, though, the US out-searched the UK in seven of the last ten Decembers.

2025 was the quietest US December in the decade, at 2.7 times a typical month, so the ten-year average is quoted.

Japan searches for Scotch eggs more than Britain does

Japan looks up Scotch eggs about 21,000 times a month, in Japanese. That is more than the UK's 17,000, and no other English food comes close in Japan. Eton mess is second, at 3,200.

The Scotch egg also leads in Indonesia and Nigeria. In the US it is the second most-searched English food, at 64,000 a month, nearly four times the UK figure.

Eton mess wins in four European countries, led by the Netherlands

The Netherlands searches for Eton mess 9,700 times a month. That is more than Australia and Canada combined. It is also the top English food in Belgium, Poland and Finland.

France is the only country where crumpets come first, at 3,800 searches a month, just ahead of Yorkshire pudding at 3,400.

Banoffee pie leads in India, Brazil and the Philippines

Banoffee pie was created at The Hungry Monk in East Sussex in the 1970s. It is now the most-searched English food in India, at 7,300 searches a month, and in the Philippines and Brazil.

15 of the 25 foods are searched more abroad than at home

The Scotch egg has the biggest gap. It is searched almost six times as often abroad as in the UK. Stilton, hot cross buns, Battenberg cake, crumpets and clotted cream are all searched at least three times as often abroad.

Americans are more curious than Brits about several of them. The US searches for crumpets and clotted cream about twice as often as the UK, and for hot cross buns, spotted dick and Battenberg cake more often too.

Ten English foods we keep to ourselves

The other ten are searched more at home. Victoria sponge draws 28,000 searches a month in the UK and about 8,900 across its seven biggest markets abroad. Bread and butter pudding, Eccles cakes, jam roly-poly and Melton Mowbray pork pies follow the same pattern.

What counts as an English food

The list starts with every English dish in YouGov's 2019 poll of classic British food and every English food with protected name status on the UK register. Dishes from Scotland or Wales are left out, as are dishes with disputed or shared origins. Beef Wellington may be French. Shepherd's pie is claimed by Ireland and Scotland too. Scones are left out because the American scone is a different bake.

The ranking covers foods: puddings, cakes, bakes, pies, sausages, cheeses, clotted cream and Yorkshire pudding. Meals and drinks were checked but are not ranked. All the figures are in the full data.

How we measured it

Search volumes come from Ahrefs Keywords Explorer. They are average monthly Google searches over the last 12 months, for the 40 highest-searching countries per food, pulled on 15 October 2026. They are modelled estimates, not Google's own figures. "Most loved" means most searched.

Searches for the 25 foods show up in 66 countries. The maps show the 31 where the top food reaches at least 1,000 searches a month. Below that, the estimates are small and rounded, so the gap between first and second place is too narrow to call a winner. Austria (Yorkshire pudding) and Portugal (Eton mess) sit at 900, Mexico (Cornish pasty) at 700 and Romania (crumpets) at 500. All 66 countries are in the full data.

"Abroad" adds up the seven highest-searching countries outside the UK for each food. It is a floor, not a global total. Japan was checked with Japanese-language search terms, and the larger of the Japanese and English figures is used. Stilton and Wensleydale use the "cheese" search terms, and Melton Mowbray pork pie its full name, so place names are not counted.

The Yorkshire pudding trend uses ten years of monthly US and UK searches, January 2016 to December 2025. A December spike is December's searches divided by the median month from January to October that year. Populations are from the US Census Bureau (July 2025) and the ONS (mid-2024). Survey figures are from Censuswide for Made in England, 2,001 adults in England, fieldwork 13 to 16 April 2026.

Search volume measures curiosity, not what people eat, and many searches will be for recipes.
